Middlethorpe Hall York: A National Trust Property
The venue for Placrylic’s first annual art fair is the Former Home of Lady Montagu, Smallpox Vaccine Advocate
Middlethorpe Hall, York was once the home of the famous diarist, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1689-1762), who wrote in her diary "Tis a very pritty place...I think there is nothing to be done but to send an immediate note to Mr Harrison to let him know I will be at Middlethorpe with my family Tuesday next" (August 1713). Lady Mary was one of the most remarkable women of the 18th century, not least due to her campaigning for the introduction of smallpox inoculation, but also as a writer and poet.
Historic House Hotels was founded in 1979 to rescue and restore run-down country houses. Through careful restoration, the houses & gardens at Middlethorpe Hall have been brought back to life as historically accurate, yet contemporary hotels. In 2008, the hotels were given to the National Trust, ensuring their long-term protection. All profits go back to National Trust’s conservation of places
